So in the few minutes since I posted
the last blog detailing the newest developments, I got a call from
our county caseworker. What she had to tell me changed our current
situation, if only slightly.
As you've read, we were under the
impression that the hearing officer on Friday had approved
unsupervised overnight stays for Little Man with his father. This
seemed to be an unusual move, as the normal path is supervised visits
→ unsupervised day visits → unsupervised overnight stays →
reunification. Although the boys' attorney asked for the
unsupervised day visits instead, we all left understanding that she
had been overruled and that the overnight visits were allowed.
However, our caseworker just called and said that, according to the
court order (a record of any changes from the most recent hearing)
that only unsupervised day visits were allowed for now.
Needlessly to say, we're a bit
confused. It's hard to say whether the hearing officer misspoke
during court and only meant to approve unsupervised day visits, or if
perhaps the judge overruled him when signing the court order and
changed it to the day visits. I have a sinking feeling, however,
that they'll come back and say there was a mistake on the court order
and that the unsupervised overnight stays will, in fact, happen.
Regardless, this change probably
doesn't mean too much in the long run. Even if Little Man is just at
unsupervised day visits now, it's just a matter of time before the
overnight stays will begin. We personally would feel better about
delaying the overnight stays for now, and instead test how the father
handles Little Man for longer periods than his current two hour long
visits.
